Academic Support Volunteers

Academic Support Volunteers assist throughout all areas of educational need at Bethany Children’s Health Center. Academic Support Volunteers help assist patients in their current educational level while admitted into the hospital. Academic Support Volunteers can expect to help tutor in a variety of K-12 subjects.

 

Bethany Children's Health Center is looking for individuals who are in higher-level classes in high-school, education majors in College or those who have a education related career.

Adaptive Recreation & Fine Arts Volunteers

Activities Recreation & Fine Arts volunteers at Bethany Children’s Health Center offers opportunities to interact with patients through sports related activities within the Activities of Daily Living, Adaptive Baseball Field, Fine Arts and other Activities of Daily Living areas. Volunteers support the work of the Hospital’s staff and provide companionship, friendship, education, encouragement, physical and mental activities for patients.

Education Classroom Volunteers

The Education Classroom Volunteer program at Bethany Children’s Health Center offers volunteers the opportunity to assist teachers and patients in each of the Hospital’s six special education classrooms. Volunteers support the work of the Hospital’s staff and provide companionship, friendship and encouragement to patients.

 

Classroom volunteers also may serve as Patient Companions, spending one-on-one time with patients at bedside within the Complex Care unit

Patient Companion - Bed Tower & PMRU

The "Green Team" Patient Companion program at Bethany Children's Health Center offers volunteers the opportunity to provide comfort, entertainment, friendship and stimulation to pediatric patients in the Bed Tower and Pediatric Medical Rehabilitation Unit (PMRU) by spending one-on-one time with patients, Patient Companions support the work of the Hospital’s staff and provide peace-of-mind to patients’ families.

The Patient Companion program at Bethany Children’s Health Center offers volunteers the opportunity to provide comfort, entertainment, friendship and stimulation to pediatric patients in the Complex Care unit.  By spending one-on-one time with patients, Patient Companions support the work of the Hospital’s staff and provide peace-of-mind to patients’ families.

Play While You Wait

Attention High-School and College Students! Bethany Children's Health Center aims to transform the waiting room experience to a fun, anxiety-free environment. Play While You Wait volunteers provide engaging activities such as crafts, games and puzzles to patients and siblings in Outpatient Services.

VOLUME Summer Program

The VOLUME Summer Program is a service-based, hands-on learning experience for high school students hoping to pursue careers in medicine, nursing, rehabilitative therapies, special education or social work. Participants have the opportunity to work one-on-one with the Hospital’s pediatric patients at bedside and in special education classrooms. VOLUME also includes educational presentations, skill and character-building activities and an opportunity for job shadowing.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Those applying for the 2022 program must be enrolling in 11th and 12th grade during the 2022-2023 school year.
  • Applicants must commit to attending all sessions, only two absences are allowed.
  • Selected participants must receive certain required immunizations and Tuberculosis (TB) tests.
  • Submit a completed online application, including an uploaded copy of the applicant’s immunization records.
  • Include one online recommendation. The recommendation should be completed by someone who can speak to the applicant’s character, work ethic and ability to show compassion to others.  Appropriate recommenders include teachers, coaches, academic counselors, small group leaders, pastors, or those who have supervised the applicant in an employment or volunteer role. Recommenders should not be family members, boyfriends/girlfriends or friends. Applications will not be considered complete until the recommendation is submitted.
  • Those accepted into the VOLUME Summer Program will be required to provide documentation that they have received the vaccine for
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox) twice in their lifetime and the vaccine for MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) twice in their lifetime.
  • Participants also will be required to receive two skin tests for Tuberculosis (TB), which can be administered at no cost by The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital.
